Order No.649 was for six 4'-8½"
gauge 2-4-0 Beattie Well tanks works progressive Nos. 331 - 336
supplied in 1863 for use on the London and South Western Railway
numbered 177 - 182. The engines were rebuilt in 1883-1884 and
taken out of service and scrapped from 1891 - 1897.
The driving wheels were 5'-6"
in diameter and the outside cylinders 15" dia x 20"
stroke.
A total of 82 Beattie Well
Engines were supplied to LSWR from the first order in 1863 to
the last in 1875. Some of the later engines had larger cylinders
16½" dia x 20" stroke and some of the earlier
engines were rebuilt with tenders.
It is understood that two
of order No 3141 supplied in 1874 still survive.
Works progressive No. 1412,
LWSR No. 298, SR No. 0298 (1923) & 3298 (1931), British Railways
No. 30587 (1948) withdrawn from service in 1962 & preserved
on the South Devon Railway, Buckfastleigh.
Works progressive No. 1414,
LWSR No. 314, SR No. 0314 (1923) & 3314 (1931), British Railways
No. 30585 (1948) withdrawn from service in 1962 & preserved
