Order No.773 was for eighteen
4'-8½" gauge 4-4-0 tank locomotives works progressive
Nos. 412 - 429 supplied in 1864 for passenger use on the London
Underground numbered 1 - 18.
These were the first of the
"Metropolitan" tanks, BP's 773 class, which were built
until 1886. Metropolitan Railway purchased 63 in total; Metropolitan
District Railway 54; Midland Railway 6; Rhenische Railway 5;
LNWR 16; LSWR 6 & South Eastern 3.
The driving wheels were 5'-9"
in diameter and the outside cylinders 17" dia x 24"
stroke with a boiler pressure of 120 psi. The engines for the
underground were fitted with condensing apparatus. |
